Winter Bees are my favorite!

Physiology: Winter bees have a larger and fatter body compared to summer bees. This is due to their diet, which is rich in fat and low in protein, leading to the development of a larger fat body. The fat body is a special tissue that regulates metabolism and produces vitellogenin, a substance that enhances the immune system and increases the bee’s lifespan.
Longevity: Winter bees can live for up to six months, which is significantly longer than the typical six-week lifespan of summer bees. This extended lifespan is crucial for the survival of the colony during the winter months.
Role: The primary responsibility of winter bees is to protect the queen and maintain the temperature within the hive. They cluster around the queen and shiver their flight muscles to generate heat, keeping the hive warm enough for survival.
Fat Bodies: Winter bees have a higher concentration of fat bodies in their abdomen, which store nutrients and help them survive without external food sources for extended periods. This adaptation allows them to sustain the colony through the winter when there is little to no nectar or pollen available.

Nov 12th, you love to see it! It was so dry this year that many colonies really struggled through fall. We’re going around the yards pulling extra equipment and feeder jars, making last assessments, and setting winter rims and covers. Very happy to see that most of the colonies were in far better condition than I dared hope. Bees are incredibly resilient. They never cease to amaze me. We have lots of exciting things to look forward to next spring, but for now we settle in to the quiet (equipment refurbishing, sanitizing and building) time of winter. 🐝 #honeybees #northernbeekeeping

In today’s Monday morning queen-spotting - A new regent has replaced our long-reigning White Queen. Under the daughter the colony has a bit of a different pace than I’ve come to know of the mother these past few years. The energy shift was what prompted me to have a closer look inside this morning. Sure enough, there is a new queen on the throne. Her winter nest looks great and they’ve already made weight. I look forward to seeing how they emerge in the spring. 👑🐝 #queenbee #honeybees #northernbeekeeping #beekeepersofinstagram #beekeeping

Last week I made the rounds to all the beeyards culling and combining where necessary and moving everyone into their final winter configurations. The fall flow was not spectacular this year, in fact it was probably the driest I’ve seen it in years. There was an abundance of goldenrod but it was so dry the pollinators weren’t really working it like we normally see and there were fewer patches of fall asters. A very large proportion of the queens really slowed down production very early this year. Winter nests that we observed were better from our older stock than from younger ones. We pulled honey supers early opting to supplement the colonies in their winter build up efforts. I culled heavily this year (about 1/3), which is not a practice I am fond of, but understand the necessity for sustainability. I finished in time for the colonies to settle and reorient just in time for a hard frost last night. After the disappointment that comes from a cull I am happy with what I am seeing now going into winter and I’m already looking forward to spring. 🐝🍯🐝 #honeybees #beekeeping #northernbeekeeping #beekeeperofinstagram #beehive

Monday morning queen spotting. The Goldenrod is in full bloom. The Asters should be coming along soon. The final flow and push to build winter nests has started. We’re observing robbing behaviors which makes that final honey pull a real challenge. Monday morning queen spotting. The Goldenrod is in full bloom. The Asters should be coming along soon. The final flow and push to build winter nests has started. We’re observing robbing behaviors which makes that final honey pull a real challenge. Temps in the low to mid 70 in late August - a thing unheard of! It’s been glorious! Right now is when we are doing the heaviest repetitive heavy lifting in our beeyards - checking honey progress, harvesting where ready, pulling supers to get at the brood chambers to do mite washes, evaluate queens and assess the overall health of the colonies, and make plans for winter configurations, then put them all back together again (very heavy lifting) and on to the next to do it all again. It’s usually in the high 80s or 90s right now and the bees tend to be a bit spicier this time of year so this has been a real treat. We’ve definitely been able to get much more done at decent, enjoyable pace. This clip is of a freshly hatched virgin queen making her first rounds. There are still plenty of drones so we’ll allow nature to do her thing but keep an eye on this colony to be sure she returns and sets up house well before first frost. #honeybees #apismellifera #bees #beekeeping #northernbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeping #summer
