When 🐝 start putting up 🍯 and capping it over it happens FAST! We will be making our first 2025 honey pull over the next few days, about two weeks ahead of our normal schedule. I wish you could smell these honey frames! The honey smells like Butterscotch!! 😋 It was 108°F today. Whenever anyone asks about beekeeping I always tell them “it is rewarding, but it isn’t glamorous. Finally a break in the rain. It turns out Bee Math is worse than Chicken Math by a factor of ten. The bees took me serious this year when we told them we were scaling things up. They are winning! I have another 40 deeps and 500 frames to assemble. Had to take a break to run out for nails and crown staples but that is all they are giving me time for, literally. So, back at it! If I’ve gone missing, know this is where you will find me for the next 48-72 hours. I will catch up soon! Moving materials to build hive stands onto our new property. Once we get the stands set up and level they’ll be ready for our first round of splits this weekend. This property is part of a very old farm. It is pasture land that has been sitting fallow for many years. Our intention is to disturb as little as possible, improve the soil over time, and add native pasture grasses and wildflowers that will feed the local wildlife, and of course the bees. It took three days, but I finally completed full hive inspections from all the yards today, rotated out some old equipment for new, gathered the extra honey frames together to feed splits, and finally have an accounting of all of the colonies post winter into spring build up. A number of the overwintered colonies are just really getting rolling and a few have already received their first honey supers. Our total losses sit at 38%. That includes the initial 35% hit we took when I culled down going into fall with the absentee fall flow and queens shutting down before building a winter nest. Crazy year! A couple of queens failed to start up again. I cracked the lid on one today to witness them balling their queen. Brutal! There is a lot of talk of doom and gloom for the 2025 season, but all colonies I inspected are bringing in pollen and nectar and building comb, so I’m going to keep a cautiously positive outlook.
